The students say their professor targeted them because of their nationality, and filed a civil rights complaint as a result. But their instructor says he was just doing his job, and was calling out academic dishonesty.

This was a challenging story to tell because we were trying to describe cultural tensions that were rising in response to a current phenomenon. As more international students from China entered U.S. universities, some professors began to form opinions about these students. Some of those opinions made it difficult for the students to feel accepted and be successful academically.

The hardest part about reporting this story was finding the truth. Students described experiences with their professor that he contested.

IMPACT: Following the publication of the story students started a petition to remove the professor that received over 300 signatures. The professor resigned.
